Brief Introduction of the Legal Cell



The legal cell constituted under Sec 484 of Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act, 1976 and is working since 1978. The Legal Cell is headed by the Head of the Legal Cell who is a Retired District and Session Judge who is head of the department. Working under him are Two Deputy Law Officers, Three Assistant Law Officers and Four Junior Law Officers.



Working Nature of Legal Cell in Brief



The cases of which the notices are served on BBMP are entrusted by Head of the Legal Cell to the concerned panel advocate. The work of collecting information and sending vakalath to the panel Advocates of BBMP in respect of matters referred to them has been entrusted to Junior Law Officers. Para wise remarks are required to be furnished by the concerned Departments of BBMP in respect of cases filed against the BBMP. Based on which Special attention can be given to each and every case by filing the written statements, counters and objections in the respective matters and defending the cases of BBMP. The Assistant Law Officers are entrusted with the work of furnishing opinion in cases received from their respective zone and monitoring the above matters.

The Head of the Legal Cell is attending to important files referred by the departments of BBMP, apart from advising the concerned departments in important matters and attending to the cases referred by the State Human Rights Commission. He attends the Hon’ble High Court in important cases and coordinates with the concerned Advocates and the concerned departments in important cases and public interest litigations.

The Deputy Law Officer is designated as the Appellate Authority and Assistant Law Officers are the Public information officers in respect of cases arising under the Right to Information Act, 2005. Other than this legal cell also deals with matters concerning Human Right Commission, Lokayukta cases and Green Bench matters.
